Background Gyanvapi Mosque and Arguments
Built a long time ago by a king name Aurangzeb the Gyanvapi. Mosque has been use by Muslims for a very long time. But since 2021 Hindus have been saying they should be allowed to pray there. Claiming it use to be a Hindu temple and that Hindu priests prayed there until 1993.
The mosque committee, the group taking care of the mosque said it’s always been use by Muslims. They mention a law from a long time ago that says religious places can’t be change after 1947.
Archaeology and Surprises
To figure out the truth, a judge ask for a special survey. During this survey, someone said they found a statue of a Hindu god, Lord Shiva, in the mosque. The mosque committee disagreed, saying it’s just a part of a fountain for washing feet. Another survey also said there was an old Hindu temple before the mosque was built.
Court Decision and Feelings
Last week the court said Hindus can pray in the mosque’s basement. And the barriers around it should be remove This made the Muslim community sad. And they feel the legal process wasn’t fair.
The caretaker of the mosque, Syed Mohammad Yaseen, said, “Everyone, even the surveying agency and the judges, seem to be on the other side. We don’t think we’ll get justice.”
Changes and Worries
Now, the barricades around the mosque are taken down, and Hindu priests are praying inside. Some people even change the signs showing the way to the mosque to say “temple” instead of “mosque.”
One of the Hindu people happy about the decision, Sita Sahoo, said, “Now we can pray there, and soon, a big temple will be built!” This comes after the Prime Minister open a new temple in Ayodhya, where there was an old argument about a mosque and a temple.
Concerns and What’s Next
The lawyer for the mosque committee, Akhlaque Ahmed, said they will challenge the court decision, but he’s not very hopeful. He said, “The government and the whole system seem to be on their side. We don’t have much power.”
This decision about the Gyanvapi mosque adds more problems to India‘s history of religious tensions. People worry it might encourage more arguments about other mosques, making it harder for different religions to get along.
In a time where people talk a lot about religion in politics, this decision in Varanasi raises questions about how to be fair to everyone’s beliefs and not make things worse. The next days will likely have more talking, arguing, and people wondering about how different religions can live together peacefully.
